The Duke of Edinburgh made an informal visit to Wellington.

1872
Wellington was linked to Auckland by telegraph.

By the mid 1870 a few houses had started to occupy the lower slopes of the hills behind Lambton Quay, Wellington was beginning to look a little more permanent.

1875
Wellington Cricket Association was form. The Basin Reserve became its home.

1876
St. Marks Anglican Church built in Te Aro

1878
Wellington Tramways Co. began a service using steam engine trams.

1879
A Fire burned down the Grand Opera House in Manners St. together with about 10 arces of business premises.
